President Tajani official visit to the United States

European Parliament President, Antonio Tajani, will be in the United States from February 27th to 28th for an official visit.

Ahead of the mission, President Tajani said:

“An EU-US clash over trade would damage both sides of the Atlantic when the real problem is China. It’s far from being a market economy and often does not play by the rules. Let's look beyond disagreements over duties and tariffs, standing together to face down unfair practices.

“The European Union and United States share fundamental values like freedom and individual rights, underpinned by strong liberal democracies and rule of law. In a world where illiberal, authoritarian regimes are in the ascendancy, we are natural allies and must continue to strengthen this bond.

“Right now, we are fighting a historic battle together to restore democracy and human rights in Venezuela, where a ruthless dictator tramples upon the dignity of his own people reducing it to starvation.

“We must cooperate more in areas like defence, the fight against terrorism, migration control and global stability. I am a pragmatist. I am also confident that the current US Administration understands that a united and strong Europe is what is best to defend our common values.”

In Washington on Wednesday, President Tajani will meet, among others, the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Nancy Pelosi; the Secretary of Commerce, Wilbur Ross; and the Secretary General of the Organization of American States, Luis Almagro, as well as representatives from Congress.

He will also lay a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Arlington National Cemetery.

In New York, on Thursday, President Tajani will meet the Secretary General of the United Nations, António Guterres.

President Tajani will pay tribute to the victims of the attacks on the Twin Towers at the 9/11 Memorial and Museum before delivering a keynote address at Columbia University’s World Leaders Forum.
